Advice on SPSS use

#1
Hi all

i have a dataset with a series of ranking questions, for example;

Please rank the following in terms of how well they reflect your view on XXXX
1 being not relevant 5 being excellent

how do i analyse these types of questions? currently i'm just looking at the mean score and writing a summary but it seems a little basic. I have other general info but i have no knowledge on how to test them against the ranked questions, for example;

i could assess those who are co-located with their mean score for how they perceive working with others - but i just don't understand how

i'm happy to share my data file as i'm desperate for some guidance - my degree depends on it :)

kind regards,
Dan

I would just calculate the means and compare them and do t-tests. (Although I know that this is controversial but I think that it is a pragmatic solution. Why make it more complicated than it needs to be?)

thanks for the tip - its what i've been doing bar the t-tests. I read around and found out that a Mann Whitney U test might help. I applied it to the following question;

Please rank the following activities in order of how important they are (1 most / 12 least)

So my dataset is 40 or so responses with 12 activities ranked 1 thru 12

I ran the Mann Whitney for the responses with the grouping variable as 'organisation' - i have respondents from 2 orgs in the dataset

Here is the output

firstly, is this the right test and how do i interpret this, i know its telling me there is no significance between values but is there anything i can say based on the values? looking at means alone, in the raw data, it appears there are difference between how the 2 orgs view the activities, so i'm a little stumped. Any help is most welcome and greatly appreciated :)

I thought you had data that was between 1 and 5. What is it?

Please rank the following in terms of how well they reflect your view on XXXX
1 being not relevant 5 being excellent
Please give a few examples of actual questions and actual answers.

in relation to the above Mann Whitney the question posed was;

Please rank the following in terms of how important they are in your organisation (1 most / 12 least)

Conflict resolution
Opportunism
Competing for resources
People protecting their turf
Influencing decision makers
Individual career advancement
Networking
Change resistance / blocking
Managing risk
Reducing external criticism
Change management
Alliancing / building relationships

Please give us two examples of the values that two respondents gave.

In the first post you said:

If they game 1 though 12 I don't know what to suggest.

it's only the one above that is 1 thru 12 (the vast majority of questions are rank 1 thru 5). the respondents answered by listing their most important to least important by assigning a number to each option, example of which is below;

Respondent #1

Conflict resolution _1
Opportunism _3
Competing for resources _4
People protecting their turf _9
Influencing decision makers _10
Individual career advancement _8
Networking _7
Change resistance / blocking _11
Managing risk _12
Reducing external criticism _2
Change management _5
Alliancing / building relationships _6

Respondent #2

Conflict resolution _2
Opportunism _4
Competing for resources _6
People protecting their turf _8
Influencing decision makers _10
Individual career advancement _12
Networking _1
Change resistance / blocking _3
Managing risk _5
Reducing external criticism _7
Change management _9
Alliancing / building relationships _11

Do you have a suggestion for the 1 thru 5s? i really appreciate your help, so far all i have done is compare means and made some tentative observations based on this.

Example of a 1 thru 5 question is here;

How important are the following skills to your role?

Personal skills
Interpersonal skills
Reading people and situations
Building alliances
Strategic direction and scanning

the 5 options can be scored 1 thru 5, 5 being most important and 1 least.

so an typical answer might look like this;

5
5
4
2
1
