# Can anyone help me with this Spearman test?

Hi everyone

I am doing a Spearman correlation as part of a university project and wondered if anyone can help me with it please? I have to find a corellation (or lack of) between the behaviour of butterflyfish and the health of a reef using the behavioural data I collected and the live coral cover in the area.

To determine the health of the reef, we did line transects, markning the
lifeform below each 50cm mark. So I'm going to get a percentage of how much of the transect had live coral on it.

For the fish, I did a time budget, marking every 15 seconds what their
behavior was, whether it was feeding, swimming, hovering etc and got a
percentage of how much time it takes up

So I have to use a statistical test to determine if the fish behaviour
changes as coral cover changes i.e. do they feed more in areas of higher
coral cover? do they fight more in areas of low coral cover?

I'm using a Spearman correlation for it (after talking to my Stats proffesor at Uni) but now I'm not sure how to actually go about it in SPSS

An example of the data would be this:

Site 1 - Fish 1
------------------
Swimming - 5%
Feeding - 80%
Hovering - 5%
Fighting - 5%
Hiding - 5%

Site 1 - Fish 2
------------------
Swimming - 10%
Feeding - 70%
Hovering - 10%
Fighting - 5%
Hiding - 5%

Site live coral cover = 65%

Site 2 - Fish 1
------------------
Swimming - 5%
Feeding - 80%
Hovering - 5%
Fighting - 5%
Hiding - 5%

Site 2 - Fish 2
------------------
Swimming - 15%
Feeding - 65%
Hovering - 10%
Fighting - 10%
Hiding - 0%

Site 2 - Fish 2
------------------
Swimming - 5%
Feeding - 90%
Hovering - 5%
Fighting - 0%
Hiding - 0%

Site 2 - Fish 3
-------------------
Swimming - 5%
Feeding - 85%
Hovering - 5%
Fighting - 0%
Hiding - 5%

Site live coral cover = 75%

I am going to correlate live coral cover with each behaviour over all my sites (there are 6 in total), so would I enter the data like this into SPSS (to take swimming as the example)

Swimming ------ Live coral cover
5 -------------- 65
10 ------------- 65
5 -------------- 75
15 ------------- 75
5 -------------- 75

And do the test from that? Or am I entering the coral cover too many times?

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Thanks
