Explanatory v exploratory variables

#1
Hi, I am having to design a sampling survey of 'your local government decides to invest money promoting your area as a tourist destination among United States citizens. To select the best advertising approach, they want to know which activities would be of interest to potential tourists, and how choice of activities varies with age group. The activities include: outdoor adventure activities, wine and food and general sightseeing etc.'
Am I correct in thinking the explanatory variable is the types of activities (nominal), exploratory (or could this also be explanatory?) variable is age group (ordinal) and the response variable is the level of interest of each activity (ordinal based on a scale of 1-5)?
Would so appreciate some general feedback here!
Thank you in advance :)
