help importing data

#1
Hello everyone,
I am trying to download data from ADNI into SPSS for my dissertation. They have packages for SPSS online with two files: an excel (.csv) and a SPSS syntax file. After saving the .csv file to my computer and running the syntax, I keep getting the following:
"Error # 4385. Command name: DATA LIST
>More variables appeared in the variable list than formats were specified
>for.
>This command not executed."

Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong or if I am even going about opening the SPSS package in the correct way?
Thanks

Why are you running syntax? Why not just open the file? SPSS will open the file directly without needing to be imported.

From the the file menu, choose Open then Data. You should be able to open the csv file from there. (Change the file type to "Text" if you can't find it.)

The variables are not identified in the csv file. It looks like all this is specified in the syntax file. Is this not correct?
Here is the syntax that they are having me use:
DATA LIST FILE= "../data/adas.csv" free (",")

Sorry -- I don't know anything about this dataset or how it is structured (looks interesting, though).

Why can't you simply open the csv file and assign your own variable labels? If you know what order they are in, you should be able to do it by hand. It looks like the syntax is simply automating the process to make it faster. But maybe someone who knows about syntax (or has actually seen/used the dataset) would know for sure.

You could try it. Open the file, click on the "variable view" tab at the bottom, and assign each variable a name. See what happens. Just don't save over your data file. Make sure you give it a new name to distinugish it (just in case).

Im sending this essentially as a PM to atgers - I encountered the exact same problem you encountered with the ADNI dataset - it appears to me (albeit with limited spss experience) that the set of syntax files are problematic
what was the workaround or strategy that you adopted
thanks Ronan

Also having the exact same problem... and am not entirely clear on how to actually merge everything together in the ADNIMERGE package for SPSS. Anyone who can offer some insight would be much applauded.
