mean or median for presenting statistics

I am currently writing a paper and I am in a dilemma about which statistics to use when I present the descriptive data. Some of the data is normally distributed and some is skewed. As I understand it I should use mean and sd for the normally distributed data and median and interquartile range for the skewed data. However this ends up quite confusing in tables with some median and some means.
What do you suggest? Is it OK to just use the mean and sd for all data irrespective of how it is distributed for the purposes of giving summary statistics.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
