Median vs. Weighted Median?

Hi! Just had a general question about median vs weighted median? I have a clear understanding of what both are but was looking for insight as far as both advantages and disadvantages of using one over the other? When would it be preferable to use the weighted median over the median (and vice-versa)? From what I gather weighted median doesn't seem to be a calculation used all that often compared to median?

As an example I have some "school expenditure per student" data from the United Kingdom. I can easily calculate a median school expenditure per student by looking the school expenditure per student of the median school but might it be preferable to calculate a weighted median (weighted on number of students in each school) by instead looking at the school expenditure per student corresponding to the median student?
