Null hypothesis significance testing (NHST)

#1
This is my first stats course and I am finding it harder than pre-calculus. I know that the NHST contends that the sample mean is equal to the population mean or that the variation is due to chance. Can I conclude that the NHST is a way to find an approximate value of the true population mean?

No. Frequentist statistics can't do that (in contrast to Bayesian statistics). The NHST
tells you how probable your sample mean is if the Null hypothesis were true.

With kind regards
