Probability of Retirement Planning success

I just want to know your point of view about securing our future in terms of its probability of success. Of course, we always wish a 90-100% deal when it comes to securing our future. How does the success probability of a retirement plan differs to a pension plan? What are the chances of getting a good plan?
I just thought about it because I read an article about retirement planning. Although, I have had a long conversation with a financial advisor before and mentioned about an investment type of plan. This will require me to pay a premium for 10 years and a fund manager will handle my account. After the maturity period, I will have the option to either withdraw my funds or not.
