# significant chi-square but non-significant standardized residuals

Hello, I am running 2x2 and2x3 chi-square tests. For one of the tests I ran, although the Chi-square statistic was significant, none of the standardized residuals (used to further interpret the outcome) were significant (i.e., the values ranged from -1.96 to 1.96). Not sure what this means or how to proceed with interpretation. any help would be great! thanks!

Can you report the chi-sq p value?
Also, note that +/- 1.96 should correspond to a p value of 0.05!
Also, I have read somewhere that the stnd residuals are often too conservative, and that the adjusted stnd residuals should be taken into account instead.

Hello, the p values for the tests in question is .018 and .043. That said, when I calculate the adjusted standardized residuals I don't seem to run into the problem (i.e., the values are all above +/-1.96). Do you happen to have a reference for that off hand? Thank you so much for your help!!
