Can anyone recommend some reading for this type of analysis - something basic if possible

There is nothing basic on such a topic. You might try Hierarchical Linear Models 2nd Ed by Raudenbush and Bryk. It was used in my multilevel class. Not easy by any means, but it is extensive.
