SPSS Creating final ranking of multi-response ranking question when mean is not possible (because N differs for each variable)

#1
Hello everyone,

I used text box ranking with 10 answer options and the respondents were supposed to rank their Top 4 while leaving the other fields blank.
I've created separate variables for each option and coded the following way: TOP1=1; TOP2=2; TOP3=3; TOP4=4; Missing=999

Using custom tables I can see for each variable how many voted it as TOP 1, 2, 3, 4 or didn't vote it. Now I'd like a final ranking, meaning which option ultimately ranks on TOP 1, TOP 2 etc.
I first thought I can use the mean, but that doesn't make sense, as some options got like 50 votes and others only 5 or 10.

Does anyone know how I can create a ranking with SPSS?

Your help would be very appreciated,
Katja

Blank fields indicate that the option has rank 5. You can recode them accordingly.
For the final ranking, the mean is inappropriate, since you have ordinal (rank) data.
Use the median instead.

I would substitute 999 with rank 5, but you can also leave it as 999,
since it is ordinal data. Both mean “below rank 4“. You will have some
comparisons where both options have median 5 (or 999, respectively).
I do not consider this falsification. There are just some limitations on
what can be concluded from the data.
